I mentioned that time is a critical element of the noise code - so how long does a heat pump usually run during an hour? Take a moment to think about how much time your heating unit runs... If it's like mine it tends to run a lot in the morning when you first raise the temperature setting, then it runs less as the house reaches the desired temperature.
Here's a graph generated from a sound recording that shows how many minutes the heat pump ran on a "per hour" basis, on a particular day.
What the cumulative graph shows is the total minutes of pump run time for the previous hour. In other words:
The value plotted at the time for 10:00 is the number of minutes that the pump ran from 9:00 to 10:00.
The value plotted at the time for 10:05 is the number of minutes ran from 9:05 to 10:05.
